EARLY OSCAR BUZZ: Nine AND The Road

STAGE-TO-SCREEN SENSATION: Nine is a vibrant and provocative musical that follows the life of world famous film director Guido Contini (Daniel Day-Lewis) as he reaches a creative and personal crisis of epic proportion, while balancing the numerous women in his life including his wife (Marion Cotillard), his mistress (Penelope Cruz), his film star muse (Nicole Kidman), his confidant and costume designer (Judi Dench), an American fashion journalist (Kate Hudson), the whore from his youth (Fergie) and his mother (Sophia Loren). The film is directed by Rob Marshall (Chicago) with screenplay by the late Anthony Minghella. The original 1982 Broadway production of Nine, with music and lyrics by Maury Yeston, won five Tony Awards including Best Musical. Release Date: November 25, 2009

PAGE-TO-SCREEN ADAPTATION: The Road is based on the 2006 novel by American author Cormac McCarthy. It is a post-apocalyptic story, directed by John Hillcoat and written by Joe Penhall, about the journey taken by a father and his young son over a period of several months, across a landscape blasted by an unnamed cataclysm that destroyed all civilization and, apparently, most life on earth. The novel was awarded the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, among other literary honours. The film version stars Viggo Mortenson, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Charlize Theron. Release Date: October 16, 2009
