AWARDS SEASON WATCH: Precious, Last Station lead Spirit noms

INDIE SPIRIT: Supporting actress nominee Mo'Nique in a scene from Precious, which leads the 2010 Spirit Awards contenders with five nominations.

The gritty urban drama Precious and the Leo Tolstoy period piece The Last Station each earned a leading five nominations Tuesday, December 1, for the Spirit Awards, which honours independent films. The film also grabbed honours for director Lee Daniels and screenwriter Geoffrey Fletcher.

Oscar winner Helen Mirren received a best-actress nomination for her role as Tolstoy's wife in The Last Station, while Christopher Plummer earned a supporting-actor honour as the aging Russian author in the drama centred on a struggle over his estate.
