OSCAR COUNTDOWN: Avatar, Hurt Locker lead 2010 nominees

HUNTING OSCAR GOLD: Avatar and The Hurt Locker lead Oscar nominees with 9 noms each

The box office juggernaut and sci-fi sensation Avatar and the war-on-terror thriller The Hurt Locker lead the Academy Awards race with nine nominations each, including nods for best picture and director for James Cameron and ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow.

Also nominated for Best Picture following Tuesday’s announcement are the provocative science fiction film District 9; the animated comedy Up; the bloody World War II saga Inglourious Basterds; the moving football drama The Blind Side; the recession tale Up in The Air; the 1960s drama A Single Man, and the touching teen dramas An Education, and Precious.

Frontrunners among the acting nominees include Sandra Bullock for The Blind Side, Jeff Bridges for Crazy Heart, Mo'Nique for Precious and Christoph Waltz for Inglourious Basterds.
