BEACH BAG! Great Summer Getaway Reads

LIT AFFAIR: With everyone heading down to the West coast – magical beach territory – to spend the weekend with Usher, Shaggy, Queen Ifrica, Etana and Chris Brown, a great book is a great companion for the road trip, the beach, and later on the hotel balcony. I’ve been spending my summer with these remarkable page-turners like these, titles you can add to your to-do list anytime.

* THE PARTNER by John Grisham

The master of legal fiction spins an intense and engrossing tale centred on Patrick Lanigan, a partner at a US law firm who steals $90 million from the company, fakes his own phony death and takes off for the Brazilian countryside, thinking he’ll get off scot-free. But things are not what they seem, of course. I’m already at Chapter 13, and the plot twists are incredibly good!

* ON BEAUTY by Zadie Smith

Sometimes Zadie Smith’s pacing is a tad too deliberate for my taste, but you simply can’t deny her brilliance and intelligence with the pen, particularly her skill at crafting evocative imagery, in this rich, wonderful story of family, race and class. I am pushing myself very hard to complete this book to meet my library return deadline, which is only a few days away. (Yes, people like me are still taking out library books.)

* GUESS AGAIN by Bernard Cooper

I love Bernard Cooper’s work. Humorous, engaging and witty, he earns his praise honestly. In this collection of 11 razor-sharp stories he takes readers inside the lives of gay and straight characters grappling with everything from demanding families to drug addiction, sex and HIV. The writing is so fluid you can’t stop reading. Guess Again deserves repeated reads.
