VIDEO SPECIAL: Protoje and Ky-Mani Marley team up to release magical music vid for hit collabo, “Rasta Love”

Mere days after the release of his long-in-coming debut album, The Seven Year Itch, ascendant reggae star Protoje has released the video for “Rasta Love,” his radio-ready single which features an enigmatic hook from Ky-Mani Marley. (Real talk: Ky-Mani’s vocals on this track is bananas; the first time I heard the track I was surprised to discover that it was his singing voice that was lending the Don Corleone-produced record such an irresistibly soulful groove.)

As for the video, the clip closely follows the lyrics of the song, which shares the story of a forbidden love affair involving a “militant” Rastafarian youth and the young lady who is completely in love with him, despite her father’s disapproval. Directed by Leann Ollivierre (whom I suspect, based on her surname, is Protoje’s sis), the video evokes a dreamy and occasionally plaintive atmosphere, with its campfire night scenes and vivid colouring that serves to heighten the passionate romance at the core of the narrative.
