APPOINTMENTS: Former Gov-Gen Sir Kenneth Hall to chair National Hero selection committee
Although the Jamaican government is not seeking to install a new National Hero, our law requires that a committee to consider such persons for the Order of National Hero must be in place. The last committee expired in 2008.
To this end, parliament recently accepted a motion to appoint former Governor General, Sir Kenneth Hall, to chair the new committee.
The remaining committee members are Hugh Nash, Chairman of the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission; historian and television producer Carey Robinson; and Dr. Maria Smith, Programme Manager for the Jamaica National Commission for UNESCO. Minister of Youth Sports and Culture, Olivia Grange, and Opposition MP Lisa Hanna have also been named as members. Two senators are also to be named.
