THE THESPIES: Widening scope with four additional categories

TOP HONOURS: Thespy winners Clarke, Lowe, Benzwick, Harris and Heap.

When TALLAWAH’s inaugural Thespian Spirit Awards (the Thespies) took the industry by pleasant surprise last season, serving as a reliable precursor to the Actor Boys, awards were handed out in six closely contested categories, topped by the prestigious prize for Outstanding Ensemble.

Last year’s winners were Jerry Benzwick (Outstanding Actor for his performance in Against His Will); Maylynne Walton Lowe (Outstanding Actress for White Witch); Dahlia Harris (Outstanding Supporting Actress for Judgement); Philip Clarke (Outstanding Supporting Actor for White Witch); Brian Heap (Outstanding Director for Appropriate Behaviour) and The University Players (Outstanding Ensemble for Appropriate Behaviour).

In only its second year, the Thespies are already expanding, with the addition of another four exciting categories, bringing the total to 10:

Outstanding Script (a new and original work)
Outstanding Comedy
Outstanding Drama
Breakthrough Performance (presented to a rising star in theatre or film)

As the first-leg runner to the Actor Boy Awards, the Thespian Spirit Awards annually salutes the brightest and most outstanding actors, actresses and productions in Jamaican theatre. Nominees will be revealed on Monday, January 23, with the awards presentation slated for February 20.
