WONDER GIRL: Trudy Bell banks on her mix of talent, cool and poise to excel

ON THE VERGE: "I would love to not only act but also direct and write," says rising star Bell.

Trudy Bell is a revelation. Giving a compelling and layered performance as the titular character in the new comedy Adopted Child, the 26-year-old actress seems possessed of the requisite attributes (laudable talent, confidence, a great look) to go places. In the meantime, the UWI Mona undergrad, who buzzes with intelligence and an infectious energy off-stage, has tertiary studies in Management to complete, which she hopes will provide her with the solid foundation from which to pursue her promising future. TALLAWAH gets to know one of 2011’s young breakout stars:

What’s your view on adoption and foster care? Does the system truly benefit the kids?
I think adoption is a good idea because it allows individuals to help other people, spread the generosity. And in Jamaica we have so many kids who are in need of care, and if there are people available to extend it to them, then that it is very good.

You performance as Stellarita is outstanding for its naturalness and a definite feel of authenticity. How did you prepare?
At times I go back to the script to basically reacquaint myself with the character. So by the time I am backstage and ready to go on the ideas are fresh in my mind. I actually did some research as well, and that has also assisted me. Stellarita has so many quirks and idiosyncrasies that I have to constantly remind myself of them as I play this role.

You’re such a buoyant rising star, from where do you draw your confidence?
(Laughs) I think that is something I was born with. My mommy will tell you that I have always loved performing. I have never been afraid of an audience. So it’s innate. But there are times when I was doing the last two productions that I felt nervous, but after the first scene or so the confidence starts to build.

What’s your ultimate ambition?
As they say, the sky is the limit. I would love to not only act but also direct and write. But for now I am taking it one step at a time.

>>Trudy’s Inspiration:
BOOK:The 48 Laws of Power. I found that book pretty interesting while reading it. I was able to pick up a lot of things.”
MUSIC: “Once it’s good music I don’t have a problem. I like a little bit of everything, but the lyrics have to make sense. (Laughs).”
FILM: “I love comedies, but I also like to watch a really good drama.”
