CULTURE REPORT: Latin America/C’bean film showcase returns + Local acts pick up Soul Train noms

THE REEL WORLD: From Oct. 21 to Nov. 4, local cinephiles will have their pick of charming Spanish and Portuguese art-house/indie films to take in thanks to the 2011 staging of the Latin American and Caribbean Film Showcase at the PCJ Auditorium in New Kingston. With delightful pictures that run the gamut from intriguing mystery and suspense to lighthearted romantic comedy and compelling drama, the mini-festival has assembled a range of cinematic gems from, among other territories, Brazil (Bossa Nova), Cuba (The Beauty of Alhambra) and Chile (Sex with Love). Showtime each evening: 6:30 pm.

THE CONTENDERS: Nominations for the 2011 Soul Train Awards have been revealed, and two of Jamaica’s top contemporary entertainers have been cited among the award hopefuls: embattled deejay Vybz Kartel (“Summertime”) and singjay Mavado (“Delilah”) are up for Best Caribbean Performance, alongside Machel Mantano (“Bend Over”), Kes The Band (“Wotless”) and Rihanna, who is in the running for her provocative, reggae-tinged hit “Man Down”. Comeback kid Chris Brown leads all nominees with 5 nods, including bids for Album of the Year and Best Male R&B/Soul Artist. The show, hosted by Cedric The Entertainer, will be taped at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta on Nov. 17 and will get a delayed broadcast on BET on Nov. 27 at 9:00pm. Performers will include Robin Thicke, Natalie Cole, BeBe Winans and Jill Scott.
