LAUNCH REPORT: Mission Catwalk takes on the Caribbean for Season 2

What: Launch of Season 2 of the fashion reality series Mission Catwalk

When: Tuesday evening

Where: Courtleigh Auditorium, New Kingston

Guest list: Brian George, Kibwe McGann, Carlton Brown, Kim-Marie Spence, Novia Macdonald-Whyte, Sonia Davidson, Natalie Peterson, Tishan Lee, Carolyn Bolt, Mykal Cushnie, and others.

What’s fabulously new for 2012: In addition to the Jamaican hopefuls, this year’s crop (a total of 15) includes designers who hail from countries across the Caribbean – including Guyana, Trinidad, Barbados and Belize. “I’ve been doing fashion for 4 years now, so I’m glad to be here in Jamaica for this competition. And I’m here to win,” 18-year-old Belizean Rebecca Stirm tells TALLAWAH. Adds adorable Bajan chica Kesia Estwick, “My chances [of winning] are very good because I believe in my abilities, but everyone here is very good. So it’s gonna be tough.”

Up for grabs: The winner of Season 2 will receive the following prizes:
• An opportunity to show a collection at London Fashion Week 2012
• J$500,000 funding, courtesy of NCB, to start their own clothing line
• Industrial sewing equipment valued at J$200,000, courtesy of Singer Jamaica
• A contract to sell their designs at SOHO Boutique
• A 6-page spread in Ocean Style Magazine
• A scholarship to pursue fashion at the London College of Fashion

This season’s guest judges are: Sonia Noel (Guyana Fashion Week); actress Nadia Khan; designer Barry Moncrieffe; Marcellas James-Milliner, entertainer Lady Saw; Dr. Charlene Jarrett (Ministry of Health); stylist Dexter Pottinger; Douglas Gordon (Ocean Style Magazine); designer Celia Levy; businesswoman Thalia Lyn; Michele Coulton (SoHo Boutique); designer Meiling Esau; and designer Claudia Pegus

Launch Talking Points: “I had this vision for about six years, so I’m thankful to all the sponsors for helping to bring it to reality,” observes conceptualizer and host Keneea Linton-George. JAMPRO’s Kim-Marie Spence notes, “Last year we saw Mission Catwalk alumni showing their work at Caribbean Fashion Week and Style Week. This year, we are hoping for more of the same.”
