SIX FOR TWELVE: What TYRONE is most looking forward to in 2012

Given the time of year, it’s a lot more fun to think about what you’re anticipating rather than everything you need to change. So in the spirit of thinking about the future, I thought I’d offer up six things I’m looking forward to in the New Year:

Meryl Streep getting her due:
The greatest living actress on the face of the Earth has not bagged an Academy Award since she won her second statuette for Sophie’s Choice in 1983. Are you kidding me? With her widely praised performance as Britain’s Margaret Thatcher in the Phyllida Lloyd-directed biopic The Iron Lady, Streep is poised to expand her record number of Oscar nominations to 17. But the Best Actress race (the Oscars are slated for Feb. 26) will very likely come down to a tussle between Streep and The Help’s Viola Davis. My money is on Streep.

Jamaica 50 Celebrations:
The organizers of the national celebrations to mark Jamaica’s 50th Anniversary of Independence have planned a fabulous series of activities that will run islandwide throughout the year. I’m expecting sheer spectacle and countless memorable highlights.

The London Summer Olympic Games:
With the super-impressive display by our athletes in Beijing in 2008 ever-fresh on my mind, it’s no surprise that I’m fully anticipating similar triumphs in London from the likes of Bolt, VCB, Asafa and Blake, et al. What a splendid anniversary gift to the country that would be – at a time when our national pride is at an all-time high.

The Vybz Kartel murder trial:
One can’t help following what Adidja ‘Vybz Kartel’ does, and I am very intrigued to witness what will play out when the embattled deejay stands trial in February to answer to those murder charges. Will he take the witness stand? Lordy.

Pure Theatrical Magic:
As a committed cultural critic, I always look forward to the bounty that local theatre will bring each year. In 2011, I witnessed a mixed bag of minor hits and major triumphs filled with scene-stealing performances. With the promise of such attractions as Louis Marriott’s Bedward and Dahlia Harris’ Jamaica Gold, I’m expecting a magical year – nothing less than real-deal theatrical Viagra.

TALLAWAH making strides and blazing a new trail:
If I dare say so myself, since its inception TALLAWAH Magazine has morphed into an online media juggernaut that keeps its readers in the know and on their toes. In only a couple years, the publication has bloomed into a passionate initiative with subscribers on all continents. I hope even greater accomplishments are up next. Thanks for the support and keep reading!
