Damion Crawford for Calabash 2012
As May draws ever closer, organizers of this year’s Calabash Literary Fest have already signed off on the full schedule of activities and participants, which can now be viewed over at calabashfestival.org.
Among the popular names set to grace the stage are Nigeria’s Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Dr. Carolyn Cooper (Jamaica), Olive Senior (Jamaica), Paul Holdengraber (USA), Fred D’Aguiar (Guyana/UK) and charismatic tourism state minister Damion Crawford. Crawford (pictured above with it girl Tamiann Young) will be one of three individuals doing a commemorative reading of the Orlando Patterson classic, The Children of Sisyphus on the morning of Calabash Sunday. Dubbed Jubilation!, Calabash 2012 is slated for May 25-27 at Jake’s in Treasure Beach.
‘Shotta’ Mavado heads to Hollywood
International dancehall star David ‘Mavado’ Brooks, who recently ripped the stage in Paris (above) alongside rapper Drake, is gearing up to get his feet wet in Hollywood. The deejay has confirmed that he will main-star in Shottas Too (or Shottas 2), the sequel to the gritty gangster urban classic, which starred Ky-Mani Marley, Spragga Benz and Munair Zacca.
While filming officially commenced on April 20, details are yet to emerge on what direction the story will take this time – and when the film will be released. Writer-director Cess Silvera confirmed via Twitter that, in addition to Mavado, the cast will include Ky-Mani who reprises his key role of Biggs. According to Silvera, everything is now in place to bring the long-awaited sequel to life.
