AHEAD OF THE CURVE: (From left) Powell, Williams and Stirm.
Go hard or go home. That’s precisely how the competition is shaping up this season on the Tuesday-night guilty pleasure Mission Catwalk. And with such attractive prizes up for grabs – not to mention the opportunity to debut a collection at London Fashion Week – the remaining designers seem determined to bring A+ work to the runway, making the fashion reality series must-see TV.
Yet, for local audiences especially, the million-dollar question of the moment happens to be: will the Jamaicans on the show ultimately prevail against the mighty Belizean wonder-woman Rebecca Stirm, who has already racked up three challenge wins – and is without doubt a favourite among viewers and judges?
These past few weeks, what has become crystal-clear is the fact that Jamaica’s best hopes are Gregory Williams and Crystal Powell (winner of last week’s Avante Garde challenge), who both continue to churn out dazzling, vibrant creations week upon week. But if they are to beat Stirm at her own game they’ll certainly have to step up the style wizardry they bring to their craft.
Speaking with TALLAWAH earlier this year for her April/May cover story, showrunner Keneea Linton-George disclosed that her team was thinking of devising plans to benefit the Jamaican designers should someone from another territory emerge as champ at the end of the season. Well, nothing against the massive from Trinidad, Guyana, Barbados and Belize, but we’re really hoping that won’t be the case. Stay tuned.
