BITS & PIECES: Warren Weir’s weird nickname + TV J appoints a new GM

NATIVE SON: Childhood nicknames fall into one of two categories: the cute/endearing or the hilarious/embarrassing. But I find it difficult to place the name “Turnbull,” which I recently discovered is the coming-of-age sobriquet of Olympic bronze medallist Warren Weir. What does it even mean? Well, to be perfectly honest, it did make me chuckle a bit, so I guess it falls into the latter box after all. Meantime, over in the tiny district of Refuge, Trelawny (interestingly also the birth parish of compatriots VCB and Usain Gold), Weir is the biggest thing since bully beef. “Everybody in Refuge is very proud right now,” his mother Celese Clarke reports. But they won’t be seeing him in the flesh for now. Weir, who next competes at a series of Diamond League meets, returns to Jamaica in September.

STEPPING UP: Claire Grant is the new General Manager of Television Jamaica. The station made the official announcement Tuesday evening. Grant, who has been with the company for six years, holds a Master’s in International Journalism and is a candidate for a doctorate in Business Administration from the Mona School of Business. Grant replaces Kay Osborne who resigned from the post back in February.
