EDITOR’S PICKS: Allen’s charming To Rome With Love + ABC’s new musical smash Nashville

To Rome With Love
Director: Woody Allen
Joining his ever-expanding list of cinematic valentines to charming European cities, Woody Allen’s To Rome With Love finds the enduring filmmaker tackling romance, intimate relationships and the arts in the lives of Americans and non-Americans living in the classic Italian capital. Assembling an all-star cast (Alec Baldwin, Penelope Cruz, Ellen Page, Jesse Eisenberg), including Allen himself, the film is a sumptuous, beautifully filmed piece of visual escape that does its very best to complement such masterpieces as Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008) and last year’s Midnight In Paris

Wednesdays, 10pm, ABC
In addition to the sly and eerily seductive 666 Park Avenue and the returning hit Revenge, ABC’s fall line-up gets a jolt of twangy, countrified delight with the arrival of Nashville, a brassy musical drama that takes viewers deep into the heart of show business, country music style, with some family drama and politics thrown into the mix. Hayden Panettiere (formerly of Heroes) shows off her infectious pipes as an ingénue vying for the crown of the fading queenpin (Connie Britton). If last week’s excellent pilot tells us anything concrete, it’s that ABC has scored another genuine breakout hit.
