NEWS & NOTES: Beres Hammond lands at #1 on Billboard + Dance icon to receive Bob Marley Award

PURE ELEGANCE: Judith Jamison, world-renowned dancer, choreographer and Artistic Director Emerita of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre Company, is the 2013 recipient of the American Foundation for The University of the West Indies (AFUWI) Bob Marley Award. The legendary Jamison, the first dance professional to receive the award, will be presented with the prestigious AFUWI honour during a glitzy awards gala on Jan. 30, 2013 in New York City. The AFUWI Legacy Awards Gala, now in its 16th year, is an annual event which seeks to raise well-needed funds to support scholarship programmes of the UWI and is its primary fundraising event in the United States. The Bob Marley Award is a recognition granted to individuals whose contribution to the advancement of arts and culture transcends boundaries of race, colour, creed and geography, uniting people throughout the world in a spirit that embodies the essence of the music and lyrics of the late great reggae ambassador.

NOTE WORTHY: Beres Hammond’s latest album, One Love, One Life, has made the leap to #1 on the Billboard Reggae Chart after five weeks in the market. The album, a VP/Harmony House Records release, has stayed in the Top 5 on the reggae albums chart since its Nov. 13 release, with sales climbing within the past two weeks, according to VP. This success comes on the heels of Hammond’s recent performances at Brooklyn’s Barclays Arena and the Hard Rock Cafe in Florida. While in New York City, Beres also sat in with The Roots to make his national late-night television debut on NBC's Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. “Beres’ touring and the national media exposure played a major role in this increase,” notes Aaron Talbert, Vice President of Sales & Marketing for VP Records. “CD sales at the venues and the in-store appearances in New York and Miami really put the album in front of the fans.” Adds President Randy Chin, “We hope to continue the momentum through Christmas and into 2013. We are happy and proud to see Beres at the top of the chart.”
