PEAK PERFORMERS: Jamaican sprint phenoms Usain Bolt and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce are among the nominees for the Laureus World Sportsman and Woman of the Year Award. Bolt, who was recently named Sportsman of The Year by French daily L'Equipe, headlines the list of six male nominees, including fellow athlete Mo Farah, Argentine football star Lionel Messi, swimmer Michael Phelps, Formula One champion Sebastien Vettel and Bradley Wiggins of cycling, while Fraser-Pryce is up against the likes of wonder women Allyson Felix, Jessica Ennis, Serena Williams, swimmer Missy Franklyn and skier Lindsey Vonn. The announcement of World Sportsman and Sports Woman of the year will be made on March 13.
DOWN AND OUT: Perhaps the biggest shocker of this past week: Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz crashing out of the Caribbean Cup, a regional championship. Put simply, our national football programme is in dire need of serious attention. Captain Horace Burrell has got his work cut out for him as the Boyz try to qualify for the next World Cup.
DECEMBER DIVAS: Hearty belated b’day wishes to PM Portia Simpson-Miller and entertainer Latifa ‘Tifa’ Brown, who both celebrated birthdays last week on Wednesday, Dec. 12. Tifa turned 29 with a little help from her friends at Digicel (they presented her with a delectable strawberry cheese cake at their New Kingston offices), while Sista P (alongside party colleague Raymond Pryce) observed her sweet 67.
