THE BUZZ REPORT: New kids’ centre named in honour of Fraser-Pryce + Chantal Zaky upbeat ahead of Miss Universe

GLAM GIRL: As the countdown to the Miss Universe pageant gains momentum, Jamaica’s Chantal Zaky got a proper introduction to the global E! News audience earlier this week, an appearance that elicited a wave of tweets from her followers and well-wishers. Chantal herself has been an active, upbeat presence on Twitter (“Nuff love from E News!! Team JA we on it!! :)”) ahead of the Dec. 19 coronation show, updating her followers with the latest news from Las Vegas, in addition to shots of her gorgeous costumes (like this carnival-inspired swimwear and a KingoCouture frock), as well as posting spirit-lifting affirmations from the likes of Albert Einstein and Muhammad Ali. Her enthusiasm is simply infectious, and we wish her all the best as we root for her to surpass even her own expectations. Meantime, local viewers can catch action from the glitzy pageant on TV J this Wednesday night, starting at 8:35 pm.

FIRM FOUNDATION: UTech recently hosted the official launch of the Shelly-Ann Fraser Assessment Centre for Children, a unit within the university’s College of Health Sciences. Named in honour of the Olympic champion who graduated from the institution last month with a Bachelor of Science degree in Child and Adolescent Development, the centre was established “against the immense global recognition of the need to improve the assessment and management of children with exceptionalities” and serves as an acknowledgement of Fraser-Pryce’s passion and commitment to working with children while memorializing her contribution to the university and to Jamaica. The sprinter was also recently named UTech’s first ambassador. Meanwhile, the services offered by the Centre will include: screening and identification, determining eligibility for special education, determining prevalence rates of disorders in children, and instructional planning, among other functions.
