2013 BAFTA NOMINEES: Spielberg’s Lincoln maintains its awards-season dominance with leading 10 nods

BEST IN SHOW: (Clockwise) Zero Dark Thirty, Argo, Lincoln and Les Mis.

The race to next month’s Academy Awards just got way more exciting, following Wednesday’s live announcement of nominees for the 2013 BAFTAs (The British Oscars) in London.

Unsurprisingly, Steven Spielberg’s sprawling historical drama Lincoln, which has been dominating awards lists all season, earned a leading 10 nominations, including nods for Best Film, Leading Actor (Daniel Day-Lewis), and Adapted Screenplay (Tony Kushner). Among the other key nominees are the grand movie-musical Les Misérables, the epic fantasy Life of Pi, the hostage drama Argo and the stalking-Bin-Laden thriller Zero Dark Thirty, which collectively round out the top feature-film category.

I’m a bit disappointed that sensational breakout star Quvenzhané Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild) was overlooked for a Best Actress nod. Also notably absent: the gripping tsunami drama The Impossible, which features Naomi Watts giving some of the best work of her career.
