BITS & PIECES: Merlene Ottey scheduled to visit Jamaica next month; Plus, news on Talking Trees and Shaggy

GOLDEN GIRL: Original sprint queen Merlene Ottey is scheduled to be in the island from February 11 to 18, as she will be honoured by organizers of the Ben Francis Cup. Ottey last paid a visit to Jamaica back in January of 2011, when she was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the RJR Sports Foundation. The Slovenia-based Ottey turns 53 this May. Work it, girl!

THE SPOKEN WORD: The Talking Trees Literary Fiesta is returning to its old haunt of the Two Seasons Guest House in Treasure Beach, St. Elizabeth, for its 2013 iteration. Earlier this week, co-organizer Gwyneth Harold indicated via email that the ever-hardworking committee will be meeting soon to iron out the details for this year’s staging of the day-long, open-air festival, which regularly features fiction, poetry, discussion segments, and dramatic readings.

SHOOTING STAR: This past Sunday, Shaggy was on set in Hellshire, St. Catherine, to film his latest music video, “Love Mi Jamaica,” which also features Red Fox and GC. The video, which premieres next month, was directed by Jay Will.
