DEFINING MOMENTS: The biggest stories and hottest topics in Jamaica in 2012

GOLDEN AFFAIR: Jamaica’s grand and spectacular Golden Jubilee Independence Gala inside the National Stadium proved to be the ultimate Jamaica 50 event for the world. From all corners of the planet, people watched as a grateful nation paused to observe a proud moment in our history, complete with bombastic musical performances and no shortage of full-bodied merriment.

FIGHTING CHANCE: In a shocking and highly-publicized case, media personality Jody-Ann Gray was the subject of a vicious gun attack at the hands of an enraged ex-lover and his accomplices that almost cost Gray her life and that of her unborn child. The perpetrators are currently behind bars pending further legal proceedings.

COMING CLEAN: Professing to embrace life as her true, undiluted self, veteran songstress Diana King officially came out as a gay Jamaican to her fans via a heartfelt letter posted on Facebook. In the letter, the singer expressed an abiding desire to be true to herself and her fans and family in the face of rampant intolerance. The news expectedly met with seriously mixed responses from Jamaicans at home and abroad.

WE REMEMBER: While our hearts remain heavy after losing such stalwarts as actress and PR maven Christine Bell and dancehall vet Wayne ‘Captain Barkey’ Hamilton (among other beloved Jamaicans), their indelible contributions to our culture will live on.
