DYNAMIC DUET: Harris and Chin in performance at the ceremony.
Hosted by the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in New Kingston last Friday evening, the RJR Foundation’s Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year Awards ran high on energy and sparkle, as the glitzy ceremony brought together a galaxy of stars from the worlds of sports, media and entertainment for a showcase featuring a mix of awards presentations, lovely speeches, and dynamic musical performances.
Here is Tessanne Chin and Michael Sean Harris rendering a splendid take on “The Prayer”; there is Jessica Yap working her brand of virtuosic magic on the violin, and the Stella Maris Dance Ensemble thrilling attendees with their dazzling choreography.
But the night truly belonged to the athletes who, for the most part, were wonderfully turned out for the occasion in fine evening-wear – including Sportswoman of the Year winner, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, in a head-turning white lace-trimmed mini-dress alongside the World’s Fastest Man, who looked sharp in a tailor-made black suit and tie as he accepted the trophy for Sportsman of the Year.
Also warranting a mention: keynote speaker Michael Holding, who issued challenge after challenge to our national sports administrators; our handsome Caribbean neighbour Felix Sanchez (Olympic gold-medallist from the Dominican Republic) who was on hand to accept a special award from the foundation; and the evening’s comperes (Neville Bell and Yendi Phillipps), who expertly guided the proceedings with a mix of unpretentious charm and effortless rapport.
