TALK OF THE TOWN: Colin Channer exits Calabash festival; Konshens turns 28

SEA CHANGES: Now that Founder and Artistic Director of the Calabash Literary Festival, Colin Channer, has parted ways with the festival’s board and literary trust after more than a decade, people are saying the festival will never be the same without him. But Justine Henzell and Kwame Dawes, the remaining two musketeers, have vowed to keep the flame burning while announcing that the beloved word-and-fellowship fiesta will now be held every two years, returning to Treasure Beach next May. Undoubtedly, the show must go on, but Colin’s unique presence will be greatly missed.

ON THE RECORD: Popcaan was the featured guest on CVM’s On Stage over the weekend to address the next phase of his music career and the “fiasco” that played out at Sting last Boxing Day. “I had to get the obstacle out of the way,” the deejay quipped about shoving lyrical challenger Black Ryno off the Jamworld stage, a move that sparked a fists-and-kicks melée which the police had to break up. Said Popcaan, “Me and you will never share a stage, yout’, so get it out of your mind. You don’t qualify.”

CELEB SIGHTING: Rapper-actress Eve, a frequent visitor to our shores, was recently in Kingston for some business and a little pleasure, hitting up the Fiction nightclub to vibe with fans and such local superstars as Shaggy and Usain Bolt. Girl, when is that album coming out?

B’DAY VIBES: Dancehall megastar Konshens was joined by a clubful of fans, industry colleagues, and close friends, as he celebrated his 28th birthday in high-energy style at the Quad in New Kingston on Friday night. The hitmaker, who recently scored a leading eight nods for the Feb. 2 Youth View Awards (YVAs) took to Twitter to thank all who helped make the b’day bash a smashing success: "Big up to everyone that came out... It ramm. Selekta dem guh haad. Nufff gal, nufff star, nufff fans... Big up from di sub."
