SUGAR & SPICE: Songbird Denyque talks natural beauty, new music, men and her future kids

MAKE ME BLUSH: “I like a man that’s sure of himself, because I know what I want.”

With her mix of laid-back glamour, sugary sweetness, and a dash of spice, Denyque has all the attributes to make anyone fall for her. And who can resist a chica who prides herself on keeping it simple yet never fail to swivel heads wherever she makes an appearance – from red-carpet affairs to the concert stage? “To be honest, I don’t really have a beauty process per se,” the 23-year-old singer-songwriter confesses to TALLAWAH at Tuesday’s Nominees Party for the Youth View Awards at Usain Bolt’s Tracks & Records. “I just try my best to look my best at all times, as best as I possibly can.”

She consistently succeeds with flying colours. Still, when it comes to glamming up her features with cosmetic products like makeup, she swears by Covergirl powder, Black Opal and Mac foundations. “I like to mix and match, and Shea moisturizer all the way,” she says, adding that she also enjoys switching up her overall look. “I do. I’m a sucker for that. But I don’t have a set regimen. I just go with what I’m in the mood for.”

One thing Denyque is always certain of is the kind of music she wants to craft in the studio and ultimately offer to her fans. To wit, her upcoming EP is finished and she is just itching to have it released. “It sounds amazing,” she tells me, tilting her head back with a wide smile. “It’s gonna be out about a little after my birthday this month (she’s a Pisces). So I’m really excited about it. It’s called Her Name Is Denyque, and it was produced by Ricky Blaze, and it’s gonna be amazing.”

As for those sweet love songs in her repertoire, turns out they are coming from a really special place. “I’m taken,” she says, blushing like a girl in love. What does she look for in a guy? “Oh my. Ambition; you have to be smart, you have to be able to hold a proper conversation. Funny. He has to be hilarious; he has to be able to make me laugh,” offers the songstress, who loves to curl up with a good romantic comedy. “Just be kind and know what you want out of life. I like a man that’s sure of himself, because I know what I want.”

And kids? She wants them. Someday. When she feels she’s arrived at that place in her life. “I definitely want to have a family in about four or five years,” she reveals. “I do have a five-year plan. So right now I just want to do this music and commit to it, and see it through. And after that I’ll start thinking about family and those kinds of things. I want to lay a proper foundation before all of that. So to be honest, I’m not quite ready.”

As one can well imagine, for Denyque the pursuit of happiness ranks pretty high on her current list of priorities. “My mom taught me when I was younger to always strive to be happy. Happiness is the ultimate thing to strive for in life,” she explains, with a hint of seriousness in her voice. “So no matter what, even if I am having a bad day, I always remember that someone out there is having a worse day than I am and surviving off less than what I have. So I’m really, really thankful for the opportunities that I have been given in life.”
