COMING ATTRACTIONS: Three fantastic culture picks we're buzzing about right now

ON BOOKSHELVES: Claire Messud's The Woman Upstairs is her terrific, funny new novel about rage-filled Nora, a Massachusetts schoolteacher, whose appeasing, good-girl persona is shattered when the Shahid family enters her life. Hailed by critics for its urgency, intimacy and piercing emotion, it's been called a brilliant novel of passion and artistic fulfillment that delves into the intensity, thrill—and the devastating cost—of embracing an authentic life, even as it explores the frustrations of a would-be artist. Due out in paperback this month.

ON TOUR: Ain't no stopping Konshens these days, as the ace hitmaker brings the noise and the fire, with his SubKonshus band in tow, to concert venues on his continuing overseas tour, which has seen him making recent stopovers in Martinique, French Guiana, and France's City of Lights, Paris. "Montepellier was loud last night. Still recovering," the deejay tweeted to his thousands of followers on Thursday. "Big up to everyone in the packed house and thanks for keeping it incident-free. Tonight is Orleans. French tour continues.. US next and then Europe, then Africa, then more West Indies, then who knows..." On May 26, Konshens will headline the annual Miami extravaganza, Best of the Best, and on June 7, he's scheduled to give a performance in Boston.

ON TV: Ahead of its live new-season debut, audition dates for Digicel Rising Stars have been set, with the show's producers intent on making this year's 10th anniversary season memorable, and if possible, the best one to date. Stardom hopefuls will get their shot at impressing judges Tanya Stephens, Craigy T Thompson, and Anthony Miller, as they move across the island this month into June. Folly Oval, Port Antonio (May 11); Tolan Esso, May Pen (May 12); Manning's School, Savanna-la-mar (May 18); Portmore Heart Academy, St. Catherine (May 25); and Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre, Kingston (June 2).
