ARTS BEAT: A tribute to Dr. Olive Lewin + Beres Hammond announces late-summer US tour + Akashic readies latest in popular noir series

IN MEMORIAM: A celebration of the life and work of the late Jamaican folklorist Dr. Olive Lewin will take place next Sunday, July 13, at Florida's Holy Family Episcopal Church in Miami. Participants will include Easton Lee, the South Florida Caribbean Chorale, the Jamaica Folk Revue, and the Tallawah Mento Band, among others.

CROWD PLEASER: Beres Hammond is gearing up to charm and reconnect with fans on the road when he headlines his latest solo tour this August. The concert series will take him across the southern and northeastern United States and to select venues in Canada. It's in support of his latest disc, One Love One Life, hailed by Rolling Stone as "one of the best albums of a four-decade-long career," and kicks off on August 2 at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York, culminating a few weeks later at Hard Rock Live in Orlando, Florida, on August 31.

ISLAND STORIES: Akashic Books continues its groundbreaking series of original noir anthologies with Haiti Noir 2: The Classics, due out next January. Edited by Edwidge Danticat (above), the book features all new stories and excerpts from longer works by several of today's leading Haitian authors, namely Marie-Helene LaForest, Nick Stone, Jacques Stephen Alexis, Ida Flaubert, Myriam Chancy, among others. As for Danticat (Breath, Eyes, Memory), her next solo work, a novel titled Claire of the Light, becomes available this August.
