CULTURE BEAT: Protoje set to headline mid-fall European tour + Maya Angelou to be honoured with prestigious literary award

WOMAN OF HER WORD: Poet and author Maya Angelou (I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings) is the 2013 recipient of the Literarian Award, an honorary National Book Award for contributions to the literary community, the National Book Foundation announced Thursday. It marks the first major US literary prize for the 85-year-old Angelou, a winner of three Grammy Awards for Best Spoken Word album, a National Medal of the Arts, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, America's highest civilian honour. Previous winners of the Literarian Award include Arthur Miller, Philip Roth and Elmore Leonard, who recently passed.

REGGAE AMBASSADOR: Roots-rockin' star Protoje and his Indiggnation band are heading off to Europe in October for a two-month tour, which follows their summer exploits on the "Music from my Heart Tour," which took them to nearly 12 countries across the European mainland. Kicking things off at Israel's Reggae Desert Festival in Tel Aviv on October 4, the tour will culminate in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, on November 11.
