HEALTH WISE: September's Caribbean Wellness Day aimed at transforming attitudes towards nutrition and lifestyle

WELL SUITED: To achieve a healthy Jamaica, we need healthy young people. So concludes health minister Dr. Fenton Ferguson, speaking at last Friday's launch of Caribbean Wellness Day (taking place on Sep. 14) at the Beach Resort in Ocho Rios, St. Ann. "This is something that we have to urgently address," Ferguson says. "We can't afford to foster a generation of sick people with a plethora of non-communicable diseases. This is why the ban on smoking in specified public places is on of the most far-reaching public health decisions that we have made in this country."

TAKING CARE: The Ministry of Health will be staging a number of activities in observance of Caribbean Wellness Day, which will unfold at the Ocean Village Shopping Centre in Ocho Rios. "We will be having competitions, a workout session area, and nutritionists available to do counselling. Persons from the National Council on Drug Abuse (NCDA) will do counselling as well," explains Takese Foga, the ministry's Director of Health Promotion and Education."
