PEOPLE IN THE NEWS: Brian Lumley strikes out with 689 + Order of Jamaica bestowed on Sameer Younis + New Miss Jamaica Universe crowned

GETTING HIS DUE: Last Friday, September 6, famed businessman Sameer Younis was conferred with the Order of Jamaica (OJ) during a Jamaica House ceremony. There, PM Portia Simpson-Miller, among several others, lauded Younis for his "selfless service to the country," particularly his contributions to the retail industry and community development, especially in Downtown Kingston, where he was instrumental in the launch of training programmes to benefit innercity youth.

ON THE HOUSE: Reigning Jamaica Chef of the Year, Brian Lumley, is now the proud proprietor of a hotspot eatery appropriately titled 689 by Brian Lumley. The multifaceted culinary whiz hosted a private pre-opening tasting (the establishment opened its doors on Sep. 8), where a sizeable and sophisticated crowd enjoyed "a memorable evening," no doubt bearing the Lumley stamp of approval. 689 is located at 20-22 Trinidad Terrace (adjacent to The Quad) in New Kingston. ALL-JAMAICAN GIRL: Sublime dazzler Kerri-Ann Baylis on the weekend became the fourth ever beauty to snag the national double of Miss Jamaica World and Miss Jamaica Universe. Baylis, who emerged winner of the 2013 pageant during a small-scaled coronation at Jewel's Dunn's River Beach Resort and Spa in St. Ann, was crowned Miss Jamaica World in 2009. Uzuri International are the new franchise holders of Miss Jamaica Universe. Rounding out the this year's MJU top five are: Chantal Davis, Salomie Campbell, Monique Brady and Kashema Scarlett. Miss Jamaica Universe 2013 is set to take place on Nov. 6 in Corocus City in Moscow, Russia.
