THE BUZZ REPORT: Culture news and notes you should know about

On October 5, the results of the 2013 Heineken Inspire Competition were announced and each of the four category winners presented with hefty cheques valued at a quarter of a million dollars. Each awardee was also assigned a mentor to assist them in further developing their respective projects. Congrats to Rayon McLean and Maya Wilkinson (film), Christopher McKenzie (art), Kristol Jackson (fashion) and Matthew Mitchell (music).

While outgoing team leader Vishnu Tolan did not seek re-election (but will remain as a member of the executive committee), Robert Richards now occupies the role of President of the Jamaica Badminton Association, following the sporting body's 2013 AGM at the Jamaica Olympic Association last Saturday, October 5. "We need to get our act together right now to lift badminton," Richards says, "so as to make the sport not only popular but also make it reach out to the people so that we can get the support of sponsors when we approach them for assistance."

The 2nd Annual Orrett Rhoden International Music Festival is set for November 24 to December 1, with the aim of putting the spotlight on classical music with a series of concerts to be held in Kingston and Westmoreland. Says conceptualizer Orrett Rhoden, "I have great plans to take music and tourism in this country to the next level."

Appointed Deputy Executive Director in 2010, Delroy Gordon has made the leap to Executive Director of the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC), with his new appointment taking effect on October 1. A Justice of the Peace for the parish of St. Mary, Gordon first joined the cultural agency in 1987 and has served on several parish and national committees.
