NEWS & NOTES: JCDC publishes commemorative Gold Anthology + Freddie McGregor to be honored this weekend in Washington

GETTING HIS DUE: Celebrated reggae icon Freddie McGregor, whose acclaimed latest album, Di Captain, was released by VP Records in January, is set to receive the 2013 Marcus Garvey Lifetime Achievement Award during the 20th Annual Caribbean-American Heritage Awards set for this Friday evening at the JW Marriott Hotel in Washington DC. According to organizers, the awards show was conceived to recognize individuals of Caribbean (or Caribbean-American descent) who have been instrumental in the development or creation of an essential facet of culture in the region.

COLLECTOR'S ITEM: Get your copy of the newly published Gold Anthology, a compendium of outstanding poems, essays, short stories and plays from the National Creative Writing Competition over the past decade. With a foreword contributed by Prof. Edward Baugh (whose new collection of poems, Black Sand, arrives next month), the anthology was launched during this year's creative writing awards ceremony on Nov. 5 at the Knutsford Court Hotel in New Kingston. Meanwhile, an islandwide exhibition tour, featuring prize-winning entries from this year's competition, is headed to a JCDC parish office near you -- commencing in Kingston next week and culminating in St. Thomas next July.
