THE GRADUATES: Noel Dexter, R. Danny Williams among UWI's honorary doctorate recipients

FANTASTIC FIVE: Each year, the University of the West Indies (UWI) makes a selection of distinguished Caribbean nationals to specially honour during the institution's weekend of graduation ceremonies. As anticipated, this year's cohort of honorary graduands is no less esteemed, eliciting resounding applause recently as they rose to accept their doctorates honoris causa. Comprising the 2013 batch: the University Singer's Artistic Director and Mona's Director or Music, Noel Dexter (Doctor or Laws); Mill Press publisher Valerie Facey, above, (Doctor of Laws); Professor Emeritus Barry Higman (Doctor of Laws); CNN Worldwide's Janet Rolle (Doctor of Laws) and renowned businessman and corporate icon R. Danny Williams (Doctor of Laws). "It's a huge honour to be so recognized," said Williams, giving the keynote address during last Saturday evening's valedictory exercise, "and I am extremely proud to be among these honorees."

HEAD OF THE CLASS: Backed by brains and no shortage of awe-inspiring ambition, Mona's 2013 valedictorians (all female and First Class honorees, to boot) are: Law school standout Olivia Derrett; Psychology major Shoyea-Gaye Grant; Accounting whiz Keva Taylor and CARIMAC alum Janelle David.
