WHERE MY GIRLS AT? "If people only knew what single moms go through," laments May (Nia Long, excellent), one of the five women at the centre of Tyler Perry's fast-paced sisterhood comedy-drama The Single Moms' Club who decide to form a support group to help each other catch up on life -- and maintain their sanity. These are five radically different women but they are very much alike in one crucial respect: they know all too well the stress and struggles that come with juggling single parenthood, career and what's left for a social life. Co-starring Amy Smart, Terry Crews, Cocoa Brown, Wendi McLennon-Covey and Perry, it's a heartfelt, sporadically amusing look at work and womanhood, nature and nurture. Tyrone's Verdict: B
LITERARY GOLD: Showing yet again that her Commonwealth Writers' Prize-winning debut, Purple Hibiscus, was no flash-in-the-pan success, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has been named the 2014 winner of the US-based National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction, for her widely praised latest, Americanah. While the Nigerian novelist (a former Calabash Literary Festival headliner) copped the highly coveted fiction award, the poetry category went to Frank Bidart for Metaphysical Dog, and Franco Moretti's Distant Reading was tops among the non-fiction contenders.
STRING THEORY: Under the baton of music director and conductor Franklin Halliburton, there's no compelling and complex composition the Philharmonic Orchestra of Jamaica can't bring to spirited life. Teaming up with the NCU Chamber Ensemble, sparkling soprano Ana Strachan, and masterful works by everyone from Haydn and Schubert to Jamaica's own Dr. Andrew Marshall and Dr. Althea Neblett, the orchestra enchanted audiences at Mona recently with their ovation-worthy Musical Delights weekend, setting the stage for what one can confidently predict will be a productive existence on the local music scene, with marked emphasis on keeping classical music in the spotlight.
