CROWN HEIGHTS: Miss Universe Jamaica franchise holders Karl Williams and Mark McDermoth (Uzuri International) are going to great lengths to groom this year’s crop of finalists vying for the coveted title. “Training is big for us this year, as this will make a stronger winner. What we’re seeing from Miss Universe now is that it’s a beauty pageant but substance is critical,” McDermoth explains. “We are giving the contestants an extra shot in the arm to be amazing. We want to bring out their personalities and prepare them to manage any element of the competition.” Eighteen gorgeous and intelligent young ladies have made it to the grand finals. In addition to memories to last a lifetime, this year’s queen will walk away with a wardrobe valued at one million dollars, a cash award of $300,000 and a one-year gym membership courtesy of the Spartan Health Club, among other prizes. The coronation show takes place August 26 at the Jamaica Pegasus in New Kingston.
